Ilias

Ilias comes from Albania ; he was born in 1982 at Librest (near Pogradets) and came in Greece for the first time in 1996. At the time of the interview his worked as a 'Construction worker'.

Summary:

The interview was conducted in the university building. Ilias´ family has 7 members. Ilias came to Greece for the first time when he was still enrolled in school. He stayed in Greece only during the summer and then returned to Albania. After 6 months he came again to Greece and hasn´t left since. He came directly to the Volos area and in particular to Zagora on Mt Pelion, where one of his cousins was living. He is not married and now lives in Volos with a cousin. He has done many different jobs; mostly he has been employed in the construction sector and currently he supervises the work brigades employed at the construction of a clinic. Some of the main issues discussed in the interview concern: his decision to migrate and his family´s attitudes about that; the migration journey in terms of adventure and his changing feelings during the trip; the first settlement period in Zagora and his first working experience; his decision to be baptized; his relations with his family back home and his feelings of alienation; his thoughts about work and his future plans; his views on Greek and Albanian men and women living in Greece and the differences between Albanians living in Greece and those living in Albania; his friends and modes of entertainment.
