Zoe

Zoe comes from Albania ; she was born in 1959 at Shkoder and came in Greece for the first time in 1995. At the time of the interview her worked as a 'Live-in domestic helper'.

Summary:

The interview was conducted at the home of the researcher´s and informant´s common friend. When Zoe was very young she moved with her family to Tirana. Her family is comprised of eight members. Zoe is married and has one daughter, who is 14 years old. She came to Greece after her husband got seriously ill and upon his relatives´ suggestion. In the beginning she left her daughter with her parents-in-law, but after 8 months she took her to stay with her in Athens. Since then they have been living in the house where Zoe has been working for the last ten years. Some of the main issues discussed in the interview concern: her early days in Greece and her work in a house where people were speaking Albanian (arvanitika); her second journey to Greece by plane and her arrest by the police; her work experience with the family who has employed her for ten years and where she also has been living with her own family; her yearning for Albania; her future plans in relation to her daughter; racist incidents.
