Dimitris

Dimitris comes from Albania ; he was born in 1975 at Tepelen and came in Greece for the first time in 1996. At the time of the interview his worked as a 'Construction worker'.

Summary:

The interview was conducted in the university building. Dimitris is married and has one child. He left Albania alone when he was 16 years old, in order to help his family financially. Since then he lives in Volos and he works in the construction sector. Some years after he migrated to Greece, the rest of his family also moved here. Some of the main issues discussed in the interview concern: the motives for his migration, forged visas trafficking in Albania, migrants´ insecurity because of problems concerning the legalisation process (arrests, deportations, residence permit), the criticism of the Hoxha´s regime, the first period of settlement in Greece, working experiences, Albanian migrants´ negative image projected through the media, leisure activities, gender relations and marriage, religious experience under communism, baptism and the changing of his name, future plans, his ties to the country of origin and his feelings during visits to Albania.
